Job Description

Provides comprehensive nursing care of patients in a Pediatric Intensive Care unit. Provides an advanced level of specialized nursing assessments/interventions and care to complex critically, terminally or chronically ill patients. Provides an advanced level of nursing care to critically ill children or pediatric patients based upon assessed needs of the patient. This care includes but is not limited to: continually observing, monitoring and assessing the patient's condition; performing life saving measures. Performs resuscitations within established Basic Life Support and Pediatric resuscitation algorithms; interpreting signs and symptoms of deterioration and initiating corrective action; assisting physicians with complex procedures; managing equipment and devices including ventilators; monitoring invasive and noninvasive equipment; measuring patient progress during fluid resuscitation; interpreting abnormal laboratory test values; administering other complex treatments such as total enteral feedings, parenteral administration of electrolytes, fluids, blood and blood components and authorized specialized medications, such as IV push medications; monitoring vasoactive drug infusions; adhering to infection control and safety policies and procedures. Operates and monitors specialized therapeutic and resuscitative equipment. Plans comprehensive nursing care for patients. This highly developed care includes but is not limited to: implementing the Nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation) and aspects of nursing care appropriate to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit., performing family teaching; teaching breastfeeding techniques. Collects and records data pertaining to patient health status: uses patient data to determine nursing diagnoses and preparing an individualized plan of care to meet the patient's needs; assesses patient and, family's psychosocial, educational and spiritual needs; teaches family members. This plan determines the interventions suitable for each patient/family. Provides complete personal care or assisting family members with performing the patient's personal care. Administers physician prescribed medications; performs therapeutic measures and procedures as prescribed by the physician or required as a standard of nursing practice. Applies scientific knowledge to resolve problems related to physical, physiological, psychological, social or rehabilitative needs. Incorporates teaching and learning activities into action plans; observes, evaluates documents and reports patient signs/symptoms and response to therapy. Operates patient care equipment; initiates life saving measures in absence of a physician; recognizes, interprets and records patients' signs and symptoms, and abnormal laboratory values that require the notification and/or intervention of a physician. Teaches health care instructions to patients and/or family; incorporating the family in treatment plan and decision-making for care, providing supportive care to patients and family during terminal illness; submitting all required reports before the end of the shift. Provides care for pediatric patients IAW established staffing patterns currently being used in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Provides clinical oversight of technicians/LPNs when providing patient care. Ensures the clinical nurse complies with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures and guidelines used in the MTF. Provides care within ethical and legal boundaries. Completes orientation and competency verification programs in accordance with (IAW) unit guidelines. Participates in the orientation and training of newly assigned personnel, as appropriate. Serves and participates in committees, functions and other meetings as directed. Provides relevant and timely information to these groups, and assists with decision-making and process improvement. Participates in customer service initiatives, and medical readiness activities, designed to enhance health services. Ensures a safe work environment, employee safe work habits and patient safety IAW regulatory agencies, infection control policies, and process improvement initiatives.

Job Requirements

Professional care theories, principles, practices, disease process and procedures. A variety of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment, the desired effects, side effects, and complications of their use as well as the accurate administration of the pharmacologic agent, including dosage calculations as required. Knowledge of the administrative requirements for proper documentation of patient conditions including disease progress, acknowledgement of teaching, and follow up care. Computer operations and proficiency in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records. Telemetry; Effectively communicates and collaborates with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization. Effectively uses appropriate communication format in addressing professional issues. Excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity in accordance with requirements. Possess and maintain current certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Shall have at least (12) months of experience within the last (24) months in a pediatric intensive care unit.
